Lowest Rated BCS Title Game Ever! Hahahahaha......

The BCS Championship game between LSU and Alabama was the lowest rated BCS Title Game ever. What's interesting to note is that the game only generated a rating of 13.1, which is down 14% from last years BCS Title Game between Auburn and Oregon.

What caused the drop in the ratings?  Was it the controversy surrounding who should be playing in the game?  Was it the fact that these two teams had already played each other in one of the most boring College Football games ever?  Was it because these two teams were from the same conference and one was NOT a conference champion?  Was it because everyone outside of LSU and Alabama knew this game would be boring?

Regardless of the reason, the rating was down which clearly shows the declining interest in the BCS format and it's games.  As a result, the "BCS" is meeting again this June to discuss further changes, a plus-1 format, because they know they have a flawed system.  Wow, if they know their system is flawed then just fix it the way it should be fixed, with a PLAYOFF!!!

The problem with this argument is that it only focuses on the interest level of the fans. A playoff would be preferable, but it would probably have resulted in the same National Championship matchup.

The rest of the college bowl series exists for the fans, but the National Championship game should be just that - #1 vs #2, regardless of whether the teams are from the same conference, or whether they are so well matched that they would dare have a less 'interesting' game.

Creating a playoff is probably the best way to go, but it should never be created under the ruse that the National Championship game will all of a sudden become a high-scoring struggle between teams with inadequate defenses. The fight for the #1 spot in the country should never be impeded on by armchair quarterbacks who think they're entitled to whatever they think an interesting game is. May the best team win. This year, it was Alabama. Just ask the Tigers.

    - Thanks for the comment, a playoff possibly could have matched the same two teams but I think that the interest level would have been substantially higher through a playoff format.  Either way, Alabama beat the Tigers pretty soundly even if it was ugly. - John P. Larson
